No parents. No limits. No clue what they’re in for.
Shy, cautious Claire has always been in her confident older sister’s shadow. While Miranda’s life is jam-packed with exciting people and whirlwind adventures, Claire gets her thrills vicariously by watching people live large on reality TV.
When Miranda discovers her boyfriend, Samir, cheating on her just before her college graduation, it’s Claire who comes up with the perfect plan. They’ll outshine Miranda’s fame-obsessed ex while having an amazing summer by competing on Around the World, a race around the globe for a million bucks. Revenge + sisterly bonding = awesome.
But the show has a twist, and Claire is stunned to find herself in the middle of a reality-show romance that may or may not be just for the cameras. This summer could end up being the highlight of her life… or an epic fail forever captured on film. In a world where drama is currency and manipulation is standard, how can you tell what’s for real?
When life gets crazy and I need something easy and fun, I love to read books about a few things: reality tv, romance, and preferably YA. I also really, really, really love The Bachelor. I found this while on one of those kicks and I’m so thankful that I did. Alison Cherry has been on my radar for awhile, and “Red” has been on my TBR shortlist for an obscene amount of time.
“For Real” is the story of two sisters who go on a show that’s basically like “The Amazing Race”, to spite a cheating ex-boyfriend. Because what better way to get revenge than to win a competition your skeeze of an ex is competing in, and do it live on television. However, there’s a twist, and the competition isn’t what the sisters thought it would be. I for sure thought that when this twist happened the book would turn into your typical YA romance novel, boy and girl meet, at some point they lose each other, there’s a big fight/misunderstanding, some big reveal happens and it all gets fixed. I really don’t mind this, in fact it’s really comforting when I read books like this.
However, that’s not what happened. I really don’t want to spoil this book, but it’s absolutely more about sisterly love than it is about romantic love, and it really swept me off my feet because of that. This book is still sweet, and just what I needed to palate cleanse. The writing is really amazing, and following the sisters journeys all across the world actually feels very realistic. While the two girls try to grapple with the twist, we actually see that happen in them, which I really enjoyed. Too often in books like this they just immediately adapt to whatever has been thrown at them, and I really loved how Cherry dove into this big change, especially since the main character Claire, has a hard time with change as well.
This is a super cute read, and I would highly recommend!
